Trump Threatens Severe Sanctions if Ceasefire Fails
U.S. President Donald Trump stirred international headlines once again, likening the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine to "children fighting in a park." In comments made during his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House, Trump warned that failure to reach a ceasefire could result in severe sanctions against both nations.
Trump emphasized that both Washington and Berlin agree that the war must come to an end and stated that he had already discussed the issue extensively with Chancellor Merz. The U.S. President also issued stern warnings to both Moscow and Kyiv, signaling that patience is running thin.
Trump: "Putin Told Me He Had No Choice"
Referencing a recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump claimed, "Putin told me, 'We had no choice but to attack Ukraine.' And I told him, 'Don't do it. You must stop this.'" Trump said the time has come for firm action.
When asked under what conditions the U.S. might impose new sanctions on Russia, Trump responded, "If we see that Russia is not going to stop, there will be very harsh sanctions. You'd be surprised how tough I can be if they cross the line."
Trump: "It Takes Two to Tango"
Trump surprised reporters by stating that if a ceasefire cannot be reached, both Russia and Ukraine could face punitive measures.
"Frankly, this applies to both sides. As you know, it takes two to tango. We're going to be tough—whether it's Russia or any other country," he said.
"Let Them Fight for a While" Analogy Draws Criticism
In one of his most controversial remarks, Trump said he told Putin: "Maybe you need to keep fighting and suffering for a bit longer, because that's what both sides seem to want before you intervene." He added, "It's a well-known analogy. Two kids fighting in a park—sometimes you let them go for a few seconds before stepping in."
Critics have condemned the remark as insensitive and reductive in the face of a war that has caused tens of thousands of casualties and displaced millions.
A Nostalgic Comparison to India-Pakistan
Trump concluded by reflecting on his past diplomatic efforts. "I was able to help end the war between India and Pakistan, and I’m proud of that. I only wish I could end this one the same way."
