Fallen Defender in the South

Ukrainian sailor Illya Tantsiura, 23, was killed on September 29, 2022, during a combat mission near the village of Bereznehuvate in Mykolaiv Oblast. His life was tragically ended by a Russian missile strike amid ongoing frontline operations in southern Ukraine.

From Law Student to Defender of Ukraine

Born in the city of Derhachi, Kharkiv region, Tantsiura completed his higher education at the Law Faculty of the Hryhorii Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University. During his student years, he worked as a bartender and maintained a strong interest in automobiles and engineering.

Despite his academic path in law, Illya chose a future in uniform. He signed a contract with the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and was assigned to the 35th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi. Following the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, he continued his service on the southern front lines, defending his homeland with honor and commitment.

A Son with a Vision for Peace

“He was the best son in the world. Our lives lost meaning without him,” said his father, Serhii. “He dreamed of returning to his hometown Derhachi and opening a small family café where we could work together. He was a remarkable human being, in school, in life, in service. Now, only a bright memory remains in the hearts of those he touched.”

Laid to Rest Among Heroes

Illya Tantsiura was buried in Odesa on the Alley of Heroes, where hundreds of Ukraine’s defenders have been honored. His memory lives on not only among his comrades-in-arms but also in the community he hoped one day to rebuild in peace.

Survived by Loved Ones

Illya is survived by his parents, his brother, and his wife. Though his dream of opening a family café will remain unfulfilled, his legacy of courage, integrity, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
