“Gayri Resmi Hürrem,” the highly acclaimed work by Özen Yula, is coming to the London stage.
Presented by Asmalı Sahne London and Nefes Productions, the play will transport audiences to the Ottoman Empire in 1558. It tells the unofficial story of Roxelana, also known as Hürrem Sultan, from within the harem of Topkapı Palace.
Emphasizing the storytelling roots of Turkish theatre, the play utilizes shadow play and masks to enhance the narrative. Directed by the accomplished Gökhan Kocaoğlu, the production features performances by Petek Kırboğa and Dilek Yorulmaz.
Fashion designer Zeynep Kartal has crafted the costumes, uniquely reflecting the elegance of the harem women. Selçuk Yılmaz’s music will transport the audience through time with Ottoman melodies. Cansu Akdeniz’s mask designs reveal the unseen aspects of the palace’s characters.
Aiming to introduce a Turkish author and the unique style of Turkish theatre to broader audiences in London, the play will be performed with English subtitles.
The performance will be taking place with two showing times on June 9, Sunday: 2pm and 6pm and
July 7, Sunday; 2pm and 6pm at the Old Church Stoke Newington Church St, London N16 9E.
